Water use increased: gather evidence before assuming an underground leak

Compare fixture observations and the utility’s information before choosing investigation.

An increase in reported use is a reason to investigate, not proof of a buried leak. Record known uses and fixture symptoms, then use your actual supplier’s guidance.

Check what the reported period covers

Use the statement’s actual dates and identify changes in occupancy, irrigation or other known water use. Do not convert a bill increase into a diagnosis or a predicted repair price. If the reading or account information seems wrong, contact the utility listed on the bill.

Record accessible fixture observations

A toilet running between uses, a dripping faucet or visible water at a connection can be useful evidence. Note the fixture and timing without opening equipment or reaching through unsafe water. Several different uses can overlap; the assessor needs to separate them.

Use the correct utility route

Augusta Utilities publishes its customer-service route for system concerns, but not every Augusta-area mailing address is its customer. Confirm the supplier from the current bill. Follow that supplier’s instructions for reading information and reporting suspected public-system issues.

Define the investigation before excavation

For a suspected private supply line, ask what observations and tests support the location and responsibility boundary. A repair proposal should separate access, material, utility coordination, testing and surface restoration. A wet yard alone does not identify the water source.

Compare two meter readings

Read the same register before and after a period with no water use. Include irrigation, appliances and automatic equipment in that pause. The EPA suggests a two-hour comparison. Enter up to six decimal places.

Enter readings from the same register.
